like walls closing in
you bookmark my day
one love from the past
and one from the present
one hope lost
the other under strain
on the very last day
of a challenging year
you close in like parentheses
reminding me of my selfishness
with your tears and your limits
a clamour for connection
i can no longer provide
my soul is inert
as i freeze my heart
to wall off past pain
then boil it dry
as i fire it for you
and my mind implodes
when you draw the line
loss saturates each breath
i stuff my wet mouth
with cotton floss
to stop the words
and quell the nonsense
i wrap myself in
moist cool towels
and wait for moss to grow
maybe beauty will come of this
