Howl into strong wind
So nobody hears you
Scream under loud music
Because you shouldn’t be sad
Sob in the shower
Your sniffles will be stifled
Turn your face away
When your tears well up
Bite your lip
Hold yourself steady
Keep quiet now
Until the dam wall breaks
Then let it all out
And start over again
There’s a good girl

We are deaf to your needs
Your pain is inaudible
Our silence is pristine
And multiplied
An impenetrably thick
Silent Wall of Sound
Layers upon layers
Of cooing concern
Sucked up in a vacuum
Murderously neglectful
The silence we respond with
Is cold
And white
And hard
And pure
We agree:
You should not be heard
We agree, en masse:
Your emotions should be bypassed
They are too much
We look right through them
Applaud your better feelings
Your sunny side up
Side-stepping
Your strange dark currents
Your pain
It does not exist to us

So bite your lip
And hold yourself steady
Keep quiet now
Until the dam wall breaks
Then let it all out
And start over again
Go on
Go back up
To the top of this page
And start reading again
Do as we say
There’s a good girl
